BIO
"An obsessive exploration of sonic possibilities, passing from aggression to fugue state, at times abstract and suspended."
- Paolo Carradori, Il Giornale della Musica
Dan Kinzelman's approach to wind instruments, composition and electronics is permeated with a visceral, here-and-now immediacy rooted in the semi-conscious biological act necessary to all of it - breathing. His work inhabits boundaries between languages and contrasting aesthetic choices, attempting to force collision and contamination, sometimes through brutality and sometimes through subtle persuasion and delicacy.
In the last decade, his experiences in dance and performance have cross-pollinated into his musical projects in works such as Resist/Evolve, Unfall, Hobby Horse, Kinzelman/Costanzo, Ghost Horse, RISE, Kudoku. Recent years have seen an expansion of site-specific and commissioned works interacting with architecture, local musical traditions and unusual acoustic spaces.
He has created site-specific works for Sottencoppa (Naples), Bergamo Jazz Festival, Cinema Galleggiante (Venice), Novara Jazz, Paris Fashion Week, Enjoy Jazz (Heidelberg, DE) and more.
Dan Kinzelman is co-founder of Holydays Festival and Moult Festival, artistic director of Young Jazz, and docent at Siena Jazz University's Laurea Magistrale and Dottorato di Ricerca.
